“Community gardens as a GenerACTOR for good governance, active citizenship and participation” is a project co-financed by the European Commission (Contract no. CSO-LA/2021/171273-3/13). As the title mentions, the project insists on the creation of community gardens in the urban area of Barranquilla (Colombia), as an instrument for good governance, active citizenship and participation.

From 6 to 10 February 2023 a study visit will be held in Rome dedicated to learning about the management methods and good practices for the creation of urban community gardens. This initiative is part of the development cooperation project “GenerACTOR – Community gardens as generators for good governance, active citizenship and participation“, co-financed by the European Union (Contract No. CSO-LA/2021/171273 -3/13). 9 representatives of the Municipality of Barranquilla (Colombia) and of Siembra Mas, a company that take care the urban greenery of the city of Barranquilla, will take part, accompanied by experts from ANCI Lazio (project leader), RISORSE PER ROMA, and REPLAY NETWORK APS, an association of educators and trainers which also works to promote the new professional figure of the “Gardeniser”.
During the study days, a total of 7 urban gardens in the city of Rome will be visited by the working group, each with its own specificities. A meeting with the Councilor for the Environment of Roma Capitale, Sabrina Alfonsi is foreseen, and, at the conclusion of the initiative, an evaluation of the experience.
As the project title mentions, the activity insists on the creation of community gardens in the urban area of Barranquilla (Colombia), as a tool for good governance, active citizenship and participation and this meeting will be particularly useful to know the key elements for the design of 4 new community urban gardens in the city of Barranquilla through a participatory process and an ad hoc training activity (Gardeniser).
The implementation of a network strategy as a tool for the exchange of knowledge and sustainability, thus contributes to strengthening the multilevel governance of the city of Barranquilla (Colombia), and provides new insights for each partner on the theme of strategies to reduce poverty levels and food insecurity of the most vulnerable communities, especially migrants, based on innovation and circular economy approaches.
